Piranha-Like Fish Dumped into Neighborhood Pond Discovered by 11-Year-Old Boy

  • In an Oklahoma neighborhood pond, a pacu fish with teeth resembling those of a human was discovered by an 11-year-old boy.
  • The fish was caught by the boy while fishing with his parents.
  • The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation expressed their disappointment at the individual who released the fish into the pond.

A pacu fish resembling a piranha, complete with human-like teeth, has been discovered in a neighborhood pond in Oklahoma, leading to outrage from the local wildlife department.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation expressed their disapproval, stating, “Dear whoever released an entire Pacu (a South American fish closely related to Piranha) into a NEIGHBORHOOD POND; how dare you.”

The department also mentioned that the fish was caught by an 11-year-old boy named Charlie Clinton, emphasizing that the pacu is an invasive species and should not be released into waterways.

While the pacu is generally harmless to humans, the department highlighted the harm caused to native wildlife by the practice of dumping unwanted pets in waterways.

The fish was found by Clinton at a catch-and-release pond in The Grove, a neighborhood in northeastern Oklahoma.

Janna Clinton, the boy’s mother, shared the discovery on Facebook, stating, “Not every day your son catches an illegally invasive fish that was in our neighborhood pond.”

The family reported the fish to local authorities and returned it to the pond after learning that it was an invasive species.

Pacus are typically found in the Amazon, tropical Asia, and parts of Western Europe. Unlike piranhas, they have square straight teeth and can grow much larger in size.

While there were jokes in the past about pacus biting testicles, these fish are generally afraid of humans and are not known to attack swimmers.

Reactions to the Oklahoma wildlife department’s tweet mainly focused on the pacu’s jaw and its resemblance to human teeth.

“WHY DOES IT HAVE HUMAN TEETH,” one person wrote, with the department responding, “IDK WE DIDN’T MAKE THEM.”
