Why Sleep Tourism is Thriving: Insights by Arwa Mahdawi

As someone who values quality sleep, I have mastered the art of staying in bed. Unlike those who jump out of bed at the crack of dawn, I prefer to remain horizontal for as long as possible. Some may label it as laziness, but I see it as an act of self-care. Sleep has incredible restorative powers, prolonging and improving both your life and mental well-being. So why not indulge in a few extra minutes of rest?

However, there are circumstances that prevent us from enjoying prolonged slumber. Early morning work commitments, anxiety-induced sleeplessness, or having a child who refuses to let you sleep past a certain time can all hinder our ability to prioritize sleep. It has become apparent to me that sleep is now a luxury, something we once took for granted. As a mother of an energetic toddler, I now understand the true value of a good night’s sleep and the lengths we would go to obtain it.

And I’m not alone in this sentiment. Sleep has become such a coveted commodity that “sleep tourism” has emerged as a major trend in upscale travel. High-end hotels are now specializing in providing the perfect environment for a restful night’s sleep. For instance, the Park Hyatt New York introduced five luxurious sleep suites equipped with AI-powered beds. London’s Zedwell hotel is designed to be a sanctuary where guests can “check in to tune out.” Moreover, exclusive resorts worldwide offer high-priced sleep retreats, promising to educate guests on the art of sleep mastery.

Although the idea of sleep tourism may seem extravagant at first glance, it aligns perfectly with the prevailing mood of our times. We live in an era of heightened anxiety, with concerns such as climate change and global conflicts surrounding us. Given this chaotic backdrop, who wouldn’t prefer to spend their hard-earned money on a peaceful escape rather than adrenaline-fueled adventures? It’s an investment in tranquility and restoration.
