No one truly comprehends the elusive nature of the critical race theory bogeyman. Its appearance, sound, and objectives remain a mystery, yet it is repeatedly portrayed as an imminent danger. This bogeyman is unfairly blamed for any misconceptions, biases, or controversies surrounding race, racism, and racial discourse. It has become a catch-all term for any undesirable or discomforting cultural idea, even if it has no direct link to the United States or its relevance outside of America. The fear of this bogeyman is instilled in us: fear it greatly.
Recently, I participated in a discussion on TalkTV regarding the decision by some Church of England schools to teach about white privilege. When asked to define white privilege, I simply explained that it refers to the absence of societal barriers based on one’s whiteness. I further clarified that white privilege does not guarantee a life without challenges, but rather means that any obstacles faced by white individuals are unlikely to stem from the color of their skin. In contrast, as a man, I encounter various pressing issues in society, none of which are rooted in my gender. This explanation is straightforward, non-controversial, non-radical, and entirely factual.
However, my fellow panelist, Peter Whittle, a former Ukip deputy leader, held a different perspective. He labeled me as “disingenuous” and associated white privilege with critical race theory, which he claimed is being promoted in our schools. He then referenced a report from an organization called Don’t Divide Us, which ironically seems focused on generating anxiety over the “Americanization” of racial discourse in Britain.
Critical race theory has been mistakenly cited in several news stories driven by racial hysteria. The latest example involves the exposure of schools teaching about the “pyramid of white supremacy.” What is this pyramid? It is an educational tool that provides practical lessons on how dehumanization unfolds, ranging from indifference and minimization to violence and mass murder. Critics argue that the pyramid’s levels refer to extreme American racial themes such as the Ku Klux Klan, cross burnings, and lynchings. These details are deemed excessive, but shouldn’t the truth be acknowledged? Self-proclaimed right-wing school inspectors have been actively involved, with one particular focus being the Nia Academy, a supplementary school in North London targeting Black students. It is worth noting that this school currently has only four children attending, costing a mere £400 per child for 33 weeks of classes.
The Nia Academy’s objective is to support Black and Black mixed-race students who are not meeting expected academic progress. It aims to provide literacy support and teach positive aspects of black history, going beyond slavery to celebrate Black contributions to society. However, it clarifies that if a white child expresses genuine interest in joining, they would not be turned away.
This initiative stirred not only a report in the Sunday Telegraph but also a response from Nick Timothy, a Daily Telegraph columnist known for his pivotal role in Theresa May’s successful premiership. Timothy criticized the Nia Academy, calling it racist and claiming that it compounds the challenges faced by the white working class. He insisted on an investigation and termination of those responsible for the decision. Such a position displays a deficient understanding of due process. It is a lesson in how not to handle the matter.
Interestingly, the ruling class exhibits the most fervent racialization of and concern for “white working-class people” whenever efforts are made to address the plight of Black individuals. These individuals were once derogatorily labeled “chavs,” but now, they serve as a conveniently weaponized concept for ideological purposes.
Church of England schools associated with the pyramid of white privilege and Haringey Council have faced challenging times. Nonetheless, shouldn’t they receive commendation for striving to create a more understanding, compassionate, and harmonious society in Britain? On the other hand, their irritable and illogical opponents appear to engage in the very identity politics they claim to despise, fueling a wave of white resentment.
These opponents are detrimental to Black communities in Britain. They oppose every well-intended initiative and criticize any steps toward equality. But what do they truly contribute to the well-being of the white working class? Merely the publication of outraged tweets, impassioned reports, and sensationalized television performances.
Although “woke” may have lost its popularity, critical race theory endures as long as it serves the agenda of the fevered right. Once it no longer proves useful, they will find another scapegoat. The most crucial task is to recognize their opportunism for what it truly is.
