Ben Wheatley discusses his exit from the Tomb Raider sequel featuring Alicia Vikander: ‘The project completely unraveled’

British filmmaker Ben Wheatley revealed in an interview with Total Film magazine that he had to step away from directing the planned sequel to Tomb Raider due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Wheatley, known for his work on films like Free Fire, Kill List, and Sightseers, was initially set to helm the highly-anticipated sequel, which starred Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.

However, the pandemic threw a wrench in the film’s production, leading to its ultimate cancellation. Wheatley explained that they were very close to starting production when everything fell apart due to the pandemic.

The first Tomb Raider film, released in 2018, earned a total of $274 million worldwide, with a budget of $94 million. Unfortunately, the sequel’s plans were derailed, and Wheatley eventually had to move on to other projects. He mentioned his upcoming thriller Meg 2: The Trench, starring action star Jason Statham, as one of the reasons for his departure from the Tomb Raider sequel.

Wheatley expressed his excitement about working on a global project like Meg 2, recognizing it as a privilege to connect with a wide audience. He also emphasized that his diverse taste in movies allows him to appreciate different genres, contrary to the notion that people lean towards specific types of films. Wheatley believes in the cross-pollination of genres and understands that many movie lovers have varied preferences.

While the Tomb Raider sequel’s fate remains uncertain, fans can look forward to Wheatley’s upcoming action-packed Meg 2: The Trench, scheduled to hit theaters on August 4.
