QC to soon witness the construction of a towering 20-storey Cancer Center in the Philippines

In the tradition of renowned specialty hospitals like the Heart Center, Lung Center, and Kidney Center, a state-of-the-art 20-story Philippine Cancer Center is set to be constructed in Quezon City. With cancer being the third leading cause of death in the Philippines and taking the lives of 96 Filipinos daily due to various tumor types, the recent townhall meeting, attended by Speaker Martin Romualdez, addressed the pressing issues faced by cancer patients and their families. The meeting highlighted the need for sufficient financial assistance, a halfway house for patients, adequate facilities for doctors, support for research and development, and the establishment of a specialized hospital for cancer treatment.

Romualdez emphasized that the Philippine Cancer Center will be one of the significant legacies of the PBBM Administration. The objective is to provide local patients with the latest medical advancements, a cutting-edge cancer research facility, and a training ground for cancer specialists from all over the country. The meeting attendees included QC mayor Joy Belmonte, Tingog Party List Rep. Jude Acidre, Iloilo 1st District Rep. Janette Garin, Quezon City 3rd District Rep. Franz Pumaren, TGP Party List Rep. Jose “Bong” Teves Jr., and Health Undersecretary Roger Tong-an.

Romualdez, who previously played a key role in the approval of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act and has been actively supporting projects for the benefit of cancer patients and the improvement of healthcare services, stated that the townhall meetings epitomize the tenet of “We listen, We Serve.” In collaboration with Committee on Appropriations chair Rep. Rizaldy Co, the Speaker aims to bring the House of Representatives closer to the people it represents.

The arrival of the new Philippine Cancer Center is long overdue, considering that cancer, often referred to as the “Big C,” has been relatively neglected by the government. It is crucial to have a national facility dedicated to cancer care, which will significantly contribute to saving more lives affected by this devastating disease.

In the world of entertainment, a strike in Hollywood due to concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) has shed light on the potential impact on the 1.3 million-strong business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines. Streaming and digital AI have revolutionized the business model in Hollywood, and there is a growing fear that machines and large corporations will replace human talent. The issue of compensation, royalties, and the use of AI during the creative process has sparked this protest, with writers already refusing to submit scripts out of fear that generative AI will replace them. Performers, including actors, stunt performers, and voice over artists, are also wary of digital replicas being used without their consent or fair compensation.

Analysts predict that this massive strike will halt the entire US entertainment industry, leading to a lack of fresh scripted TV episodes and a reduction in the production of new shows and movies. The repercussions for the local entertainment industry are yet to be seen.

It is worth noting that major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Twitter, and Facebook have undergone significant job cuts, highlighting the increasing reliance on AI technology. The World Economic Forum predicts that AI and changing economic and social conditions will result in the loss of 83 million jobs by 2027, while creating 69 million new jobs. Automation is expected to impact 42 percent of record keeping and administrative jobs. The potential impact of AI on the BPO industry, which has already benefited from AI-driven automation, is a matter of concern for many.

Although AI has streamlined processes, improved customer service, and enhanced data analysis within the BPO industry, experts like Inge Zwick believe that experienced talent still plays a crucial role in implementing and optimizing these technologies. Furthermore, Stephanie Sy emphasizes the need to redesign our economy to adapt to the age of AI, focusing on human augmentation to maintain emotional connections with customers. It is important to note that customers still value the personal touch, and their purchasing experience is heavily influenced by how they feel they are treated.

While AI presents challenges and potential job losses, there is still hope for the BPO industry and other affected sectors. Adapting to AI, leveraging its capabilities to enhance customer experience, and focusing on improved operational effectiveness can lead to new opportunities and growth.

In conclusion, the construction of the Philippine Cancer Center marks a significant milestone in addressing the impact of cancer on Filipinos. Simultaneously, concerns about AI and its potential impact on the entertainment industry and the BPO industry highlight the need to adapt and find innovative ways to harness the power of AI while maintaining the human touch in service delivery. By embracing change and leveraging technology effectively, we can overcome challenges and seize new opportunities.
