Lakewood Wildfire in Riverside County Expands by Nearly 8,000 Acres

A wildfire in Lakeview has rapidly expanded to cover an area of 7,950 acres, and as of Monday, it is 35% contained, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

An incident during the Rabbit Fire resulted in one civilian sustaining injuries. Unfortunately, there is no available information regarding the severity of the injury or the person affected.

Those affected by the Rabbit Fire have been issued evacuation orders and warnings. This fire is one of four currently blazing in Riverside County over the weekend, and it holds the distinction of being the largest among them.

Evacuation orders have been enforced for areas south of Seneca Springs, east of Jack Rabbit Trail, north of Gilman Springs, north of Portero Reserve, and west of Manzanita Park and Highway 79.

On the other hand, evacuation warnings have been issued for areas north of Seneca Springs, east of a portion of Jack Rabbit Trail, south of 4th Street, west of California Avenue, east of Manzanita Park, south of a portion of East 1st Street, and west of Highland Springs Avenue.

The Rabbit Fire continues to burn vigorously through tall grass and brush, as reported by the Riverside County Fire Department. It initially broke out on Friday at around 3:30 p.m. in the northeast region of Gilman Springs Road and Jack Rabbit Trail.

Although 152 structures are currently at risk, no damage or destruction has occurred yet, according to officials from the Riverside County Fire Department.

An evacuation center has been established at Beaumont High School at 39139 Cherry Valley Blvd for individuals and small animals. The San Jacinto Animal Shelter at 581 South Grand Ave is accepting large animals.

If anyone requires assistance with animal evacuations, they can contact the Riverside County Department of Animal Services at 951-358-7387.

The following roads are currently closed: southbound Highway 79, County Landfill Road, and Bridge Street. However, roads reopening at 4 a.m. on Monday include northbound Highway 79 from Gilman Springs to Beaumont Avenue, as well as Gilman Springs between Alessandro and Highway 79.

A total of 88 fire engines, seven water tenders, and various air tankers have been deployed to contain and suppress the spread of the fire.

“Our aim is to reinforce and enhance our containment lines, especially in the leading areas where several residential communities are situated,” said Incident Commander and Division Chief Josh Janssen on Sunday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
