Death Valley’s Heat Doesn’t Deter Tourists from Bringing Fur Coats

The city of Phoenix is currently experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures breaking records left and right. Additionally, Death Valley was on the verge of reaching one of its own heat records on Sunday, according to the AP. While the National Weather Service recorded a temperature of 128 degrees, the Furnace Creek Visitor Center, known for attracting heat-tolerant individuals, reported a scorching 130 degrees. Surprisingly, this extreme heat did not deter visitors, and instead seemed to encourage some to embrace the breath-snatching experience. One adventurous individual even wore a fur coat for the sake of sweaty giggles or memorable holiday cards.

William Cadwallader, a long-time visitor from Las Vegas, commented on the heatwave, saying, “I just want to go to a place, sort of like Mount Everest, to say, you know, you did it.” On that same Sunday, Las Vegas experienced a sweltering temperature of 116 degrees. Death Valley holds the distinction of having recorded the highest temperature on Earth, reaching a blistering 134 degrees back in July 1913. The park’s average temperature in July hovers around 116 degrees. As for Phoenix, the city reached a high of 114 degrees on Sunday, marking the 17th consecutive day with temperatures at or above 110 degrees. There is a high chance that the previous record of 18 consecutive days, set in June 1974, will be broken on Tuesday. (Read more about Death Valley National Park’s stories.)
