King Felipe of Spain approves of Carlos Alcaraz, the new champion of Wimbledon for men’s singles

Spanish King Felipe showed his approval from the Royal box as Carlos Alcaraz was crowned the new men’s champion at Wimbledon. The 55-year-old monarch looked sharp in a stylish grey jacket, blue tie, and dark trousers as he arrived to watch the final match between Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.

Expressing his gratitude for playing in front of the Spanish king, Alcaraz said, “It’s really special. It’s special to play in front of royalty. King Felipe, I am truly proud that you are here supporting me. Every time I played in front of you, I emerged victorious. I hope to see you more often! It is a truly special moment, and I have to thank you for coming and supporting me.”

The 20-year-old Spanish tennis prodigy, who was the top seed, reached his first ever Wimbledon singles final and emerged as the champion. King Felipe, 55, gave a thumbs up to the new tennis champion after his victory over Djokovic.

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were also spotted chatting with King Felipe VI of Spain in the Royal box on Centre Court. The royal couple brought their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to witness the thrilling match at the All England Club.

This historic win for Alcaraz makes him the first player outside the “big four” (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray) to claim the Wimbledon men’s single title since 2002, a time when Alcaraz hadn’t even been born yet. In fact, the last time Djokovic lost on Centre Court was in 2013 against Andy Murray when Alcaraz was still in primary school.

King Felipe, a father of two, has been closely following Alcaraz’s career since his victory in the Madrid Open last year. After Alcaraz defeated fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the Madrid Open 2022, the King congratulated the young tennis star. Later, after winning the Miami Open, the monarch personally called Alcaraz to convey his congratulations. Alcaraz expressed his astonishment and said, “It’s pretty amazing to get a call from the Spanish king. I was more nervous for that call than for the match itself. It’s incredible to receive recognition for the hard work I put in every day and the victories I achieve.”

King Felipe joined British royals, including Prince and Princess of Wales and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, to watch the final match. Princess Kate and Prince William brought their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who had a delightful time at their first-ever Wimbledon final. Eight-year-old Charlotte looked adorable in a stylish blue floral dress by Spanish designer Friki. She even had the opportunity to chat with Mu’awwiz Anwar, who performed the coin toss before the match.

Amidst applause, the royal family took their seats in the Royal box on Centre Court. The atmosphere was electric as Alcaraz triumphed over Djokovic in the fifth set, falling to his knees in celebration after delivering the winning shot. The final scores for the five-set game were 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, solidifying Alcaraz’s victory over the longstanding champion.
