Opinion: Drawing Inspiration from God’s Word

Some have suggested that certain individuals could benefit from “atis therapy” in order to quiet them down a bit. How exactly does one talk while eating the atis fruit, known for being packed with seeds? Just make sure to avoid the seedless variety if attempting this experiment!

In today’s Gospel passage (Matthew 13:1-23), the Lord imparts the Parable of the Sower to convey the significance of the soil in which the seed is planted. The Word of God is profound, potent, and everlasting, but its growth can be hindered by thorny, rocky, shallow, or fertile soil. Why is it that the Word of God does not thrive within us? Why does it wither? And why do we bear either abundant or meager fruits? It is the quality of the soil that can either make or break the outcome.

There are seeds that fall along the WAYSIDE. These represent individuals who are constantly busy, always rushing around with what they deem as more important tasks, numerous obligations to fulfill, and countless appointments to keep. The Word of God is simply disregarded, trampled underfoot, or pushed aside.

Then there are seeds that fall on ROCKY SOIL, landing amongst tough and resilient individuals who lack substantial depth. They may hear the Word of God, but they do not establish strong roots. They may grow for a while, but they are feeble, withering when faced with trials, persecutions, and temptations.

Next, we have seeds that fall on THORNY SOIL, which symbolize individuals burdened by worries and anxieties. They find themselves overwhelmed by various concerns and the demands of the material world, suffocating the Word of God in the process.

Lastly, we encounter seeds that fall on RICH SOIL, where they find receptive and responsive individuals who willingly allow themselves to be guided and led by the Holy Spirit. These are the people who not only grow but also bear abundant fruits.

When it comes to our final encounter with the Lord, may we come before Him bearing fruits, rather than empty-handed. May our hearts be filled with love and good deeds.

Lord, may our hands be blessed and our hearts filled with an abundance of love. May this prayer continually resonate within us.

God’s word acts as a life vest, keeping us afloat amidst the trials and tribulations of life. It is the joy of the Lord that provides us with courage and strength. Personally, I can attest to the fact that God’s word sustained and fortified me during my battle with cancer in 2018.

Imagine this: Many of us find ourselves submerged in the water, constantly looking down, fixated on our problems, pains, and worldly concerns. However, if we lift our heads and gaze upwards, our noses break the surface, allowing us to breathe! Let us not forget to look up!

Additionally, many of us constantly bow our heads, engrossed in our phones and gadgets. Let us remember to look up and behold the grandeur and brilliance of the world around us. May the presence of God liberate us and elevate our spirits.

“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) May the Word of the Lord continue to guide, strengthen, and inspire us on our journey through life.

Reflect on this: “Respect yourself, respect others. Walk your own path and allow others to do the same. Show respect to all, refrain from criticism, judgment, or meddling. Love more, forgive more, embrace more tightly, live with greater passion, and surrender everything else into the hands of our Creator.” (Pope Francis)

A Moment with the Lord. Lord, may Your word provide us with constant nourishment and guidance. Amen.
