Residents of a Texas neighborhood are facing attacks from territorial hawks whenever they venture outside.
Hawks have selected the Travis Heights neighborhood in Austin as their nesting ground and are vigorously protecting their offspring, going as far as attacking local residents.
The severity of the situation led to the US Postal Service temporarily suspending mail deliveries in order to ensure the safety of postal workers, according to a local ABC News affiliate.
“Since April, I can’t step outside without a hawk swooping past me or striking me,” shared Eric Klein, who was hit by a hawk. “It feels like being hit in the head with a fist-sized rock.”
The confrontational birds have built their nests near his front door, making it a perilous journey to reach his car.
Nicole Netherton, executive director of the county’s Audubon Society chapter, explained that the hawks’ aggressive behavior is due to their nesting season and protective instincts. These hawks are a protected species and cannot be harmed or removed from their nests.
“They have invested a lot of energy in ensuring the success of their babies and see us as potential predators,” said Netherton. “For residents who cannot avoid the nests of these birds of prey, carrying an umbrella is recommended for protection.”
“I understand the frustration of having an angry hawk, but once the babies leave the nest, they will calm down,” assured Netherton.
