Drunk Driver Responsible for Fatal Head-on Collision with Woman – Sentenced to Prison

A convicted felon, Lawrence Michael Dileva, 39, of Nuevo, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, DUI gross vehicular manslaughter, and a sentence-enhancing allegation of being a repeat DUI offender. He is sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison. The plea was made directly to the judge, despite opposition from the District Attorney’s Office.

The prosecution argued against the plea due to Dileva’s prior convictions, which were set aside by Judge Timothy Hollenhorst. This decision spared the defendant a potential sentence of 40 to 55 years to life behind bars. The judge deemed the imposed term of imprisonment appropriate and signed Dileva’s prison commitment order.

Dileva caused a fatal three-vehicle crash on Jan 28, 2022, on Cajalco Road, resulting in the death of 65-year-old Demiris Reid of Nuevo. A California Highway Patrol officer stated that Dileva lost control of his Ford Explorer, crossed the double yellow lines, and collided with Reid’s Chevrolet Equinox. A Honda Civic following closely behind also crashed into the SUV.

Emergency crews responded quickly but were unable to save Reid’s life. Dileva sustained moderate injuries but recovered after receiving treatment at Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley.

The driver of the Honda was uninjured. Dileva’s past record includes prior convictions for DUI gross vehicular manslaughter, receiving a stolen vehicle, burglary, and distribution of illegal drugs.
