Stability Maintained in COVID-19 Transmission Rates in LA County

The Los Angeles County health department reported a decrease in COVID-19 cases with 1,544 new cases, compared to 1,741 cases reported last week. This decline comes as COVID-19 hospitalizations reach a record low.

Notably, the wastewater concentrations of SARS CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, are at 8% of the most recent winter peak for the third consecutive week. While transmission is still occurring, there is low immediate concern for rapid spread of the virus. Wastewater concentrations provide more accurate information about COVID-19 transmission levels than reported cases alone.

Moreover, the health department recorded the lowest levels of hospitalizations for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. The average number of daily COVID-19 hospitalizations in Los Angeles County is now 211, down from 214 last week.

Furthermore, current data reveals that 11% of hospitalized COVID patients are in intensive care units. On average, there are 39 new COVID-19 hospital admissions per day, with 3% being individuals under the age of 18.

In addition to hospitalizations, case and death numbers have been steadily declining for several months.

This week, there have been 13 new COVID-19 deaths reported, with nine of them occurring in individuals over the age of 65. This highlights the vulnerability of older people to COVID-19. Elderly individuals or those with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension are at a higher risk of severe illness and death from the virus.

The Los Angeles County health department updates COVID-19 data every Thursday. However, the actual number of cases in the county is likely higher due to unreported at-home tests or individuals not getting tested at all.

Although federal emergency declarations related to the COVID-19 pandemic have ended, the county health department emphasizes that COVID-19 remains one of the leading causes of death in Los Angeles County. Ongoing efforts are necessary to reduce severe illness through readily available vaccinations, testing, and treatment.
