Hollywood Actors Rally with Writers, Forcing Film and TV Shutdown

The strike will commence at 8am UK time on Friday and is the result of failed negotiations between the union representing industry members and Hollywood studios. The disagreement concerns a fairer distribution of profits and increased protection of AI rights. In a show of solidarity, the stars of Oppenheimer, including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Matt Damon, walked out of the film’s London premiere to create picket signs. Members of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (Sag-Aftra) had previously authorized a strike if an agreement with major studios, streamers, and production companies could not be reached. Nearly 98% of the 65,000 members who voted were in favor of the strike. This strike coincides with the ongoing strike by over 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), marking the first time in over 60 years that both unions have been on strike simultaneously.
