Iowa State Senator’s Support for Trump Fades, Turns Towards DeSantis

Iowa Republican Senator Withdraws Endorsement of Donald Trump, Backs Ron DeSantis for President in 2024

In a surprising turn of events, first-term Republican state Senator Jeff Reichman from Iowa has decided to revoke his endorsement of former President Donald Trump. This decision comes after Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to criticize Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for her neutral stance in the upcoming GOP presidential primary race in 2024. In response, Reichman announced on Thursday that he now fully endorses Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for president.

During an interview with the Des Moines Register, Reichman explained his decision, stating that while Trump’s outspoken nature was tolerable when directed towards the right people, it became unjust when he targeted their own governor. Reichman felt it was his duty to support Governor Reynolds and, therefore, made the choice to withdraw his endorsement of Trump.

Reichman emphasized the close relationship between Governor Reynolds and himself, further solidifying his decision to switch his support to Governor DeSantis. He highlighted the fact that Trump claimed credit for Reynolds’ ascension to the governorship in 2018 and later endorsed her when she faced a challenging campaign. However, Trump’s recent comments about Reynolds made it clear to Reichman that he needed to prioritize their “home team” and give his support to a presidential candidate who would do the same.

Meanwhile, Governor DeSantis took to Twitter to praise Governor Reynolds, calling her a “strong leader” who knows how to ignore detractors and deliver results for the people of Iowa. With his endorsement of DeSantis, Reichman hopes to leverage his support to benefit his state and ensure that more significant successes are achieved in the future.

It’s worth noting that this conflict between Trump and Reynolds is not the first time the former president has strained relationships with Republican officials. Asa Hutchinson, the former governor of Arkansas, condemned Trump’s behavior, referring to it as “dictatorial” and asserting that America deserved better. Similarly, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley applauded Governor Reynolds as a “conservative rock star” and praised the strength of women in Iowa.

Governor Reynolds, despite not endorsing any particular candidate, has been diligent in welcoming various presidential hopefuls to Iowa. She has hosted high-profile figures such as former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. Reynolds recently joined Casey DeSantis’ “Mamas for DeSantis” campaign, aimed at attracting more women and parents to support Ron DeSantis.

The DeSantis campaign celebrated two new legislative endorsements from Representative Josh Meggers and Representative Matt Rinker of Iowa. In total, 39 Iowa lawmakers have thrown their support behind DeSantis, according to a press release from the campaign.

As of now, there has been no comment from Senator Reichman’s office regarding his decision to withdraw his endorsement of Trump. It remains to be seen how this development will shape the future of the 2024 presidential race.
