DOJ Disagrees with Trump’s Attempt to Prolong Classified Documents Trial Indefinitely

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump delivered a speech at a Nevada Republican volunteer recruiting event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Department of Justice’s special counsel has urged a federal judge to reject Trump’s request to indefinitely delay his trial on criminal charges related to his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House. The special counsel’s team argued that the trial should start in Florida on December 11, rather than waiting until after the 2024 presidential election as Trump and his co-defendant Walt Nauta have requested. Prosecutors emphasized the importance of a speedy trial and dismissed the defendants’ claims that an impartial jury couldn’t be selected until after the election. Lawyers for Trump and Nauta countered by stating that a December start for the trial is unrealistic given the amount of evidence and special circumstances of the case. Trump is the first president to be criminally charged in federal court. He and Nauta have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Both sides also raised legal issues surrounding the Presidential Records Act and the potential dismissal of the indictment. In response to the special counsel’s filing, a spokesperson for Trump criticized the prosecution as politically motivated and expressed confidence in the case being dismissed. This is breaking news.
