Speaking about her involvement, Tate expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m thrilled to be a part of The Enfield Haunting and can’t wait to collaborate with the first-rate creative team and the brilliant David Threlfall.” Threlfall, on the other hand, will portray the ghost hunter Maurice Grosse, who played a significant role in assisting the Hodgson family.

The 69-year-old actor shared his delight, saying, “I’m thrilled to reunite with director Angus Jackson and have the incredible opportunity to work with the amazing Catherine Tate for the first time. We will be bringing Paul Unwin’s rendition of The Enfield Haunting, the UK’s most notable incident of psychological inhabitation in 1977, to life.”

Unwin, the writer of the play, devoted time to studying the experiences of the Hodgson family by consulting a poltergeist expert. He explained, “Before Guy Lyon Playfair, the poltergeist expert, passed away in 2018, I had an extensive conversation with him at his basement flat in Earl’s Court.” Unwin further described the efforts of Playfair and Grosse to protect the Hodgson family and make sense of the bizarre occurrences. He added, “What Guy told me was truly horrifying. Much of what took place cannot be attributed to deception, and at the heart of it all were real individuals attempting to understand their lives. The Enfield Haunting is a ghost story that delves into the realm of psychology. It is a ghost story relevant to our times.”

The Enfield Haunting takes place during a single spring night and is based on the account of one of the ghost hunters who investigated the allegedly haunted 284 Green Street in Enfield. Reports suggested that the property was subject to a poltergeist that moved furniture and toys. Additionally, there were claims that sixteen-year-old Janet was possessed, and witnesses, including the local lollipop lady, reported seeing her float six feet in the air.

Previously adapted into a TV drama series in 2015, The Enfield Haunting will now be staged at Brighton Theatre Royal and Richmond Theatre before making its way to The Ambassadors Theatre in London for a limited West End season from November 30, 2023, to March 2, 2024. The play’s debut performance will take place in Brighton on Tuesday, November 14. Tickets will be available for sale to ATG Theatre Card Holders starting at 10am on Thursday, July 13, on the official website https://enfieldhauntingplay.com/. General ticket sales will commence at 12pm.
