Georgia Grand Jury Selected for Trump Criminal Case

Inside her office chambers in the Fulton County Justice Center Tower in Atlanta, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis of Fulton County is leading the potential criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and his allies. The grand juries seated on Tuesday will determine whether to charge them for their attempts to overturn Trump’s loss in Georgia’s 2020 election.

The investigation into possible election interference started two and a half years ago when a leaked phone call revealed Trump asking Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to change the outcome in favor of President Joe Biden. Fani Willis, the prosecutor leading the probe, plans to announce her charging decisions between Tuesday and September 1, with a possibility of indictments being issued in August. She has requested that trials and in-person hearings not be scheduled between July 31 and August 18.

Two grand juries have been empaneled in Fulton County Superior Court, each consisting of 23 members and three alternates, to sit for a two-month term under the guidance of Judge Robert McBurney. Fani Willis has the option to present charges to either or both grand juries, who will then vote on whether to return indictments.

Willis previously presented evidence to a special grand jury, which made recommendations for charging multiple individuals with crimes. However, the special grand jury did not have the power to indict, and Willis is not obligated to follow its recommendations.

Following his loss, Trump and his allies engaged in efforts to overturn the election results in swing states such as Georgia. This included submitting fake certificates to falsely declare Trump as the winner of electoral votes. Willis revealed in a court filing in May that at least eight of Georgia’s fake electors have been granted immunity in her probe.

If charged in Georgia, Trump will be facing criminal prosecution in three separate cases as he seeks the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Currently, Trump has pleaded not guilty in cases related to falsifying business records and mishandling classified documents. Despite these legal challenges, he remains the frontrunner in Republican primary polls.
