‘Fela!’ finally arrives in Washington after experiencing delays

“Fela!” made its triumphant return to the stage at Olney Theatre Center last week after more than a decade since its last production. Director Lili-Anne Brown has been determined to bring her unique vision of the Afrobeat musical to life for years, having conceived the idea after seeing the original Broadway production in 2009.

Brown initially received approval from producer Stephen Hendel to stage a revival of “Fela!” at a theater in Chicago, but unfortunately, the theater closed before she could proceed. She then took her idea to Olney, only to have the pandemic delay the production. However, her perseverance has paid off, as she is now able to bring her vibrant vision of “Fela!” to the stage with the help of a partnership between Olney and Round House Theatre.

The collaboration between the two theaters was a natural fit, as they have previously worked together on successful productions such as “Angels in America” and “In the Heights.” Jason Loewith, Olney’s artistic director, believes that “Fela!” is the perfect show for this co-production process, describing it as a mix of a rock concert, political statement, and sacred elegy that deserves to be seen.

Set in 1978 during Kuti’s farewell concert in Lagos, “Fela!” tells the story of the renowned musician as he reflects on his musical roots and speaks out against Nigeria’s military regime. Brown has created a more immersive experience for the audience, with a set designed to resemble the real Afrika Shrine and stage-side table seating for some lucky spectators.

Returning to the role of Fela is star Duain Richmond, who brings new depth to his performance after years of research and developing a friendship with Kuti’s son. Richmond’s knowledge and dedication to the role have been invaluable in a production that lacks conventional reference materials due to its limited regional revivals.

Music director S. Renee Clark also faces the challenge of interpreting the conflicting versions of the score and script, but she embraces the opportunity to breathe new life into Kuti’s eclectic songbook. As a longtime fan of his music, Clark considers this production a labor of love that goes beyond the typical theatrical experience.

The lasting impact of Fela Kuti’s message of fighting oppression is evident in the enduring relevance of “Fela!” Richmond believes that Kuti’s fearless life and his belief in his own immortality continue to resonate, as people continue to tell his story in 2023.

If you want to experience the vibrant energy and powerful message of “Fela!”, don’t miss its run at Olney Theatre Center.
