Twitter Records ‘Largest Usage Day’ as Users Shift Towards Threads

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino made an interesting announcement on Monday, stating that the social media platform had its most active day since February. This is despite reports suggesting a decline in user traffic as people shift to Meta’s new Threads app. In her tweet, Yaccarino took a subtle dig at Threads, emphasizing that there is only one Twitter. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who recently stepped down as CEO, responded with a comment about phone screentime, hinting at the possibility of breaking records. However, it’s important to note that Yaccarino’s definition of “usage” might refer to screentime rather than an increase in popularity for Twitter.

While the meaning of “usage” remains unclear, it can be assumed that Yaccarino was referring to screentime, indicating that users are spending more time on Twitter. According to Statista, Twitter currently has over 368 million monthly active users. Threads, on the other hand, has been labeled as a potential “Twitter killer” and has been presented by Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, as a more friendly alternative to Musk’s platform. Zuckerberg believes that maintaining a friendly environment will be crucial for Threads’ success, as it sets itself apart from Twitter, which he believes failed to reach its full potential.

Despite claims that Threads is imitating Twitter, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri denies these allegations. However, Musk has already threatened to sue Meta for creating a copycat platform, whereas many users credit Threads’ success to its integration with Instagram, which boasts over 2 billion monthly active users. This poses a significant threat to Twitter’s audience, as the platform’s web traffic has already decreased by 11% compared to the previous year, according to Similarweb. Additionally, recent data shared by Cloudfare’s head of cybersecurity, Matthew Prince, reveals a steep decline in Twitter’s traffic since January.

Threads’ achievements have put Musk on the defensive, intensifying the rivalry between him and Zuckerberg. The two tech giants even agreed to a real-life mixed martial arts cage match last month. Recently, Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a “d–k measuring contest,” following a tweet where he referred to the Facebook co-founder as a “cuck.”
