Sen. Janet Nguyen made an announcement on Monday that she intends to run for the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Her goal is to succeed her former chief of staff, board Vice Chairman Andrew Do, who will be termed out next year.
If elected, Nguyen, who currently serves in the state Senate, would be relinquishing her time in Sacramento to return to the Board of Supervisors, where she previously served from 2007 to 2014.
There are other candidates who have also announced their intentions to run for this nonpartisan position. They include Republicans Van Tran, who previously served as Do’s chief of staff and as an assemblyman from 2004-2010, and Kimberly Ho, a Westminster City Councilwoman. Additionally, Democrat Frances Marquez, a Cypress City Councilwoman, is also in the running.
Nguyen, who resides in Huntington Beach and identifies as a Republican, expressed her decision to run for supervisor in the First District after careful consideration and prayer.
She said, “The Board of Supervisors is where decisions are made that directly impact our quality of life. From addressing crime and homelessness to managing the cost of living, traffic congestion, healthcare, and maintaining clean beaches, the board offers opportunities to solve these issues.”
Nguyen’s previous bid for re-election to the state Senate in 2018 was unsuccessful against state Sen. Tom Umberg, a Democrat from Santa Ana.
In 2020, Nguyen was elected to the Assembly, and later regained her position in the state Senate in the following year.
