Critics suggest Joe Biden carries a ‘pessimistic’ attitude in anticipation of his upcoming meeting with Rishi Sunak

Joe Biden is facing criticism for his perceived negativity in light of the Nato dispute ahead of his meeting with Rishi Sunak at Downing Street today. The US president, who arrived at Stansted Airport last night for talks with the Prime Minister, has been accused of undermining Sunak by stating that Ukraine is not ready for Nato membership just before his visit.

Robert Courts, the Conservative MP for Witney and a former transport minister, stated, “Biden is technically correct that Ukraine’s immediate entry into Nato is difficult to envision, as President Zelensky himself has acknowledged, partly due to the ongoing war. Nato is designed to deter, and immediate entry would result in instant conflict for its members. Additionally, interoperability issues cannot be resolved in such a short time. Nevertheless, it is disheartening to hear such a negative statement from the president at a time when Ukraine requires both moral and material support.”

Furthermore, there is disagreement between the UK and the US regarding Washington’s controversial decision to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine, as the British Government is a signatory to a convention banning their use. Sir John Redwood, a former head of the No. 10 policy unit under Margaret Thatcher, has suggested that Mr. Biden’s purpose in visiting the UK is to influence the country’s stance on cluster bombs.
