Over 50% of drivers claim to be significantly affected by roadway initiatives, such as Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ plan.

According to a survey conducted by the Alliance of British Drivers (ABD), over 50% of drivers in Britain believe that there is a “war on the motorist.” This sentiment extends to the feeling that the government is not treating them fairly when it comes to driving and car ownership. Specifically, 61% of respondents agree that UK drivers are under attack, mainly due to congestion and charges like the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), the use of cameras for speed limit enforcement, and restrictions such as bus lanes.

Another concern expressed by motorists is the impending ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. In response, 59% of people surveyed want the government to either postpone or completely scrap the 2030 transition to more environmentally friendly cars. The Daily Mail is campaigning for ministers to reconsider their plans.

Bob Bull, a representative from the ABD, states that this poll demonstrates the public’s belief that authorities at all levels are engaging in a “war on the motorist.” Additionally, the results suggest a desire for government intervention, with respondents leaning towards government action rather than leaving the matter in the hands of Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper has called on councils to review “low traffic neighbourhoods” (LTNs), which have faced criticism from many individuals. The ABD believes that the real motivation behind these measures is to extract money from drivers. Bull argues that the ban on petrol and diesel cars after 2030 is impractical and not as environmentally friendly as it may seem.

Interestingly, the survey reveals that older voters are more likely to believe in the war on motorists, with 52% of those over 55 agreeing with this sentiment. However, even 44% of 18-24-year-olds share this belief.

The results of the poll highlight the desire for government intervention, particularly in regard to halting the ULEZ expansion plan in London. This aligns with Boris Johnson’s recent criticism of Sadiq Khan’s persistence with this plan.

While there are some criticisms against measures like LTNs and 20mph speed limits, the overall sentiment among respondents remains largely in favor of these initiatives.
