Landslide Causes Severe Damage to Homes in Rolling Hills Estates

A massive landslide occurred in Rolling Hills Estates, resulting in the evacuation of 12 homes. County Supervisor Janice Hahn has confirmed that these homes have been completely destroyed. Residents on Peartree Lane noticed the land shifting on Saturday at around 4 p.m., and they were promptly evacuated.

Hahn took to Twitter to announce the evacuations, stating, “I’m in Rolling Hills Estates where a major landslide has threatened multiple homes.”

According to Hahn, the Los Angeles County Fire Department ordered the evacuations. Deputies from the sheriff’s Lomita station were dispatched to patrol the neighborhood and ensure the safety of the evacuated homes.

The supervisor also shared several photos depicting the instability of the affected homes.

In one of her tweets, Hahn described the situation, “It’s hard to see in this photo, but there are homes in Rolling Hills Estates that are physically leaning, like this garage, due to the landslide. I had the chance to speak to evacuated residents. Everyone is safe, but these homes are too unstable to enter. I have already spoken with our Public Works Director Mark Pastrella, and we are offering our full support to the city and residents.”

In a later update on Sunday afternoon, Hahn shared unfortunate news, stating, “Significant land movement overnight has resulted in the complete destruction of homes along a canyon on Peartree Lane in Rolling Hills Estates.” Alongside this tweet were photos displaying some of the damage. Hahn expressed her condolences, saying, “This is just devastating for these residents. My office is ready to provide any assistance we can to the affected families and the city.”

Hahn followed up with another tweet, revealing, “Homes have been pulled off their foundations, and the land is still shifting. However, the evacuation order remains limited to these 12 homes. Building and Safety officials are present on site, continuously monitoring the situation.”

Authorities have shut off electricity in the area since Saturday and utility crews have ensured the safety of gas and power lines. The American Red Cross is assisting the evacuated families in finding shelter.

The cause of the landslide is currently unknown.
