A tragic incident occurred in Orange when a man drove his sedan in the wrong direction on a busy street, resulting in a collision with a pickup truck and a car before he was tragically ejected and killed. The sequence of events began when two calls came in at 8:19 p.m. on Saturday, reporting a man passed out in the driver’s seat of a Hyundai Elantra at a green light intersection of Katella Avenue and Tustin Street, according to Orange police Lt. Phillip McMullin.
Shortly after, at 8:20 p.m., while patrol officers were en route to the location, the driver woke up and proceeded to drive west on Katella. However, between Cambridge and Shaffer streets, the Hyundai veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a Toyota Tundra and a Honda Insight.
Tragically, the driver, who was the sole occupant of the Hyundai, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by Orange firefighters. It remains uncertain whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision or if the driver experienced a medical emergency. However, it is worth noting that the driver had prior arrests for DUI and being under the influence of controlled substances, according to McMullin.
The driver of the Tundra and his 4-year-old daughter sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital, while the driver of the Honda remained at the scene with minor injuries. It is important to note that both of these drivers were not impaired.
In order to conduct a thorough investigation, Katella Avenue was closed between Cambridge and Shaffer streets.
