In a groundbreaking move, a review panel of the Washington, D.C., Bar Association has recommended the disbarment of former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. This recommendation comes as a result of Giuliani’s handling of litigation challenging the 2020 election on behalf of then-President Trump. The panel, composed of three experienced lawyers, highlighted Giuliani’s baseless claims of election fraud and the lack of evidence to support these claims in a Pennsylvania lawsuit. The panel’s report, released on Friday, emphasizes the errors and unsupported claims made by the former mayor.
Giuliani, along with other Trump lawyers, persistently pursued claims of election fraud following Election Day until the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Unfortunately for them, their claims were consistently rejected by both federal and state courts. This disbarment recommendation marks the third lawyer associated with Trump who could lose their ability to practice law. John Eastman is facing disbarment in California, and Lin Wood recently surrendered his license in Georgia.
The panel of lawyers did not mince words when discussing the consequences of Giuliani’s actions. They explicitly stated that his effort to undermine the integrity of the 2020 presidential election has had a detrimental effect on our democracy. The report will now be sent to the D.C. Court of Appeals for a final decision.
Ted Goodman, a political adviser to Giuliani, expressed criticism towards the panel’s work, claiming that the DC Bar Association is simply an extension of the Washington establishment. He went on to argue that this decision is part of a broader effort to deprive President Trump of effective counsel by targeting Giuliani. Goodman praised Giuliani as one of the most effective prosecutors in American history and condemned the bar association’s actions, comparing them to the Soviet Union. He called on members of the D.C. Bar Association to speak out against this perceived injustice.
It’s worth mentioning that Giuliani’s law license in New York was already suspended in June 2021 due to false statements he made while attempting to pursue Trump’s repeatedly debunked fraud claims.
