Meta, the company behind Instagram, has recently launched a new app called Threads to compete with Twitter. In just seven hours after its launch, over 10 million people signed up, according to Mark Zuckerberg’s post on the app. However, users who want to delete their Threads account are finding out that they also have to delete their Instagram account because the two are interconnected.
Threads was created as an alternative to Elon Musk-run Twitter, which has undergone various changes since Musk’s takeover last year. Recently, Twitter implemented limits on the number of tweets users can view per day, with verified accounts allowed to read up to 10,000 posts, unverified accounts limited to 1,000, and new unverified accounts limited to 500.
While some users are excited about having a new option instead of Twitter, others are disappointed and want to delete their accounts. However, they are discovering that deleting their Threads account also means deleting their Instagram account, as stated in the Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy and Help Center page. The connection between Threads and Instagram is mutual, and users must have an Instagram account to sign up for Threads. During registration, users have the option to import their bio information and followers from Instagram.
Although there is a workaround, it doesn’t fully delete the Threads account. Users can delete individual posts or temporarily deactivate their account, making their posts invisible to others until they reactivate it. So, while the account is hidden from other users, it remains undeleted. Meta has acknowledged this issue and stated that they are working on resolving it.
Some users expressed their frustrations on Twitter, criticizing this aspect of the competitor app. The launch of Threads occurred shortly after Musk’s takeover of Twitter, which led to significant changes in the user experience, including tweet view limits.
Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri addressed some of the missing features on Threads, such as a search function, hashtags, and a following feed. However, he mentioned that it will take time to implement these features.
