Investigation Underway after Cocaine Found in White House West Wing
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the ongoing investigation into the discovery of cocaine on the lobby floor of the White House West Wing. Officials state that Biden considers it “incredibly important” for the Secret Service to determine how the drugs ended up in such a highly secured area.
The powder was found by U.S. Secret Service agents during a routine sweep of the White House on Sunday. It was discovered in a small, clear plastic bag on the ground in an area with heavy foot traffic. The substance was promptly tested by the fire department, which confirmed it to be cocaine. Further analysis corroborated these initial findings.
While the culprits behind this incident have not yet been identified, the Secret Service is diligently combing through visitor logs and security footage. The lobby where the drugs were found is frequented by official visitors and staff, as well as being open to staff-led tours of the West Wing during nonworking hours. These tours, however, are invitation-only and require clearance by White House staff.
If the drugs were brought in by a White House employee, it would be easier to determine this, as staff members undergo fingerprinting and drug testing. However, identifying a visitor responsible for bringing in illicit substances presents a greater challenge. A series of staff-led tours took place over the weekend prior to the discovery.
Upon finding the suspicious substance, the District of Columbia fire department was called in to assess its potential hazard. Due to the nature of its packaging, officials immediately suspected it to be illicit drugs. A subsequent lab test conducted on Wednesday confirmed these suspicions.
The White House was temporarily evacuated as a safety precaution while emergency crews investigated the matter. The Secret Service has stated that further evaluation of the substance is underway, along with an investigation into how it entered the premises.
