Zuckerberg Confirms Instagram Threads App Boasts Impressive 10 Million User Base, Emphasizing its Competitiveness Against Twitter

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads, Instagram’s response to Twitter, garnered 10 million sign-ups within the first seven hours of its online presence. This launch positions Threads as a direct competitor to Elon Musk’s troubled company.

Zuckerberg expressed his belief in the potential for a public conversations app with over a billion users. In contrast to Twitter, Zuckerberg hopes Threads will effectively capture the essence of such a platform.

Meta’s launch of Threads coincides with Twitter’s recent measures to limit the experience of non-paying users on its platform. These changes have been implemented under Musk’s ownership.

Shortly after the launch of Threads, several notable individuals joined the platform, including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Ocasio-Cortez, a vocal critic of Twitter under Musk’s leadership, expressed her hopes for a more positive and inclusive community on Threads.

Threads has shown similarities to Twitter, allowing users to share posts or “threads” consisting of memes, thoughts, and sarcasm. However, Threads distinguishes itself by focusing solely on text-based posts with a character limit of 500. Notably, the current version of Threads does not include a direct messaging feature.

Zuckerberg’s Threads, a Twitter clone, is now live. Here’s what you need to know.

One advantage Threads enjoys is its integration with Instagram, providing it with a built-in user base. Threads users can easily log in using their existing Instagram credentials and continue following the same accounts they did on Instagram.

Other potential Twitter alternatives, like Mastodon and Bluesky, have yet to grow beyond a few million users.

Meta’s blog post on Wednesday revealed that Threads was launched in over 100 countries, except for the European Union, where Meta was recently fined $1.3 billion for violating data privacy regulations. The EU’s Digital Markets Act also raises concerns about Meta’s data-sharing practices.

Meanwhile, Twitter, under Musk’s leadership, implemented temporary measures to limit the number of tweets users can read per day and prevent non-logged-in users from viewing tweets on the web browser. Musk stated that these actions aim to prevent data scraping by third-party programs.
