- Firefighters were seen on social media using ladders to assist the stranded passengers.
During a carnival in Crandon, Wisconsin, eight passengers found themselves trapped in an upside-down position on a roller coaster after it experienced a malfunction.
According to a joint press release from the Crandon Fire Department and the Crandon Area Rescue Squad, the incident occurred during the Forest County Festival. The ride, known as the Fireball, unexpectedly stopped during a loop due to a mechanical failure.
As described in the press release, the passengers were held in an inverted position by the safety harnesses on the cars, which were near the top of the loop.
The rescue team arrived at the scene within 15 minutes, but the operation took longer due to the height of the ride. NPR reported that specialized equipment, including three trucks with extendable platforms, was brought in to assist in the rescue. One of the trucks had a 100-foot platform that came from a neighboring city approximately 45 minutes away.
A bystander, Scott Brass, captured the incident on video and posted it on Facebook. The footage shows firefighters using ladders to try and help the trapped passengers. According to Brass, five of the passengers appeared to be children.
It took approximately four hours to free all the passengers from the ride. Most of the individuals received treatment for their injuries at the scene, while one person was transported to a nearby hospital for further assistance. Over 50 rescue personnel from three counties responded to the incident.
The exact cause of the roller coaster malfunction has not been confirmed at this time. Interestingly, this rescue operation took place shortly after another ride in North Carolina was temporarily closed due to a visitor noticing a crack in its support beams.
Insider reached out to the Crandon Fire Department for comment outside of regular business hours, but there has been no immediate response.
