Now, she reveals to Insider the best method for keeping shower heads clean, as they have been found to harbor potentially harmful mycobacteria that can cause lung diseases.

Mills recommends using common household item white vinegar to remove calcium and grime

According to Mills, homeowners should clean their shower heads when they notice a buildup of calcium and a decrease in water pressure.

“The most effective way to clean a shower head is to soak it overnight in white vinegar,” Mills suggests. “Then, use a used toothbrush to brush the jets and the area around them.”

Afterwards, Mills advises running the shower for about a minute to flush out any loose debris.

Alternatively, Mills mentions that CLR Remover and The Pink Stuff are also effective options.

However, Mills cautions against using bleach-based products as they can gradually damage the shower head.

Regular cleaning of shower heads is essential, with frequency depending on the location

Mills suggests that most homeowners should clean their shower heads once a month, while those residing in areas with high mineral build-up, like Florida, should opt for cleaning twice a month.

“Shower heads are prone to mold and mineral buildup inside and out – who wants to bathe in water containing these?” she adds.
