Kick Off Music Haven with Rocky Dawuni’s Uplifting ‘Music of Hope’

When Mona Golub was first introduced to Rocky Dawuni, she instantly recognized his uniqueness and talent. Golub, the founder of the Music Haven concert series and a vice president at Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets, vividly remembered the moment she encountered Dawuni at an international music conference in 2017. As he stepped onto the stage, his smile and captivating presence filled the room with an incredible energy. Golub fell in love with his music and knew that she had to bring him to Music Haven one day.

Fast forward six years, and Golub’s vision has become a reality. Rocky Dawuni will kick off the 33rd season of Music Haven on July 9. This annual summer concert series takes place in Schenectady’s Central Park, showcasing renowned international artists who perform for free on Sunday nights.

For Dawuni, who hails from Ghana and now resides in Los Angeles, this will be his first performance in the Capital Region. He aims to create a sense of hope and community during his upcoming concert. Dawuni believes in the power of music, not only through lyrics but also through the groove. He envisions people dancing, singing along, and feeling inspired. In a world that feels increasingly divided, he wants his music to be a source of hope and unity.

As an Afro Roots musician, Dawuni draws inspiration from a wide range of global musical influences, including Ghanaian highlife, Reggae, and American pop. His unique blend of cross-cultural music has earned him Grammy nominations in three categories: Best Reggae Album, Best Global Music Album, and Best Global Music Performance.

At Music Haven, Dawuni is excited to share his universal musical influences with the audience. He encourages everyone to attend with an open heart, as the music will create an atmosphere that elevates beyond individual selves, fostering a sense of unity and connection.

In addition to the international music, Music Haven also offers food inspired by different cultures. During Dawuni’s performance on July 9, the concession stand will serve “Island Specialties” such as jerk chicken, Jamaican-style beef patties, and iced coconut lattes. This emphasis on food reflects Music Haven’s mission to break down barriers, celebrate shared humanity, and bring different cultures together.

This summer, the Music Haven concert series will feature a diverse range of genres, including Indonesian jazz, South Asian funk, a Latin block party, and Irish fiddling, among others. For a complete schedule, you can visit their website at www.musichavenstage.org. Remember, admission to these Sunday night concerts is always free.
