Poor Air Quality Alert Linked to Fireworks Shows

Due to the numerous fireworks shows scheduled for Fourth of July festivities in the Southland, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a particulate advisory for Tuesday and Wednesday. This advisory warns people about the poor air quality and the potential health problems that can arise from high levels of airborne particles.

This advisory will be in effect from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

The agency stated, “The Air Quality Index (AQI) may reach the Hazardous AQI category from the evening of Tuesday, July 4th through the early afternoon on Wednesday, July 5th.”

“Fireworks emit high levels of particle pollution (PM2.5 and PM10) as well as metal air pollutants, all of which can contribute to negative health effects. … Breathing in fine particulate matter can lead to a range of cardiovascular and respiratory health issues, such as heart attacks, worsening of asthma symptoms, reduced lung function, coughing, difficulty breathing, and even premature death in individuals with heart or lung disease.”

July 4 and 5 are typically the worst days of the year in the South Coast Air Basin for airborne particles, according to the AQMD.

The agency provided some tips for minimizing health risks during periods of poor air quality:

– Limit your exposure by staying indoors with windows and doors closed or finding alternative shelter.

– Avoid engaging in strenuous physical activity.

– Use air conditioning and/or an air purifier. If possible, avoid utilizing swamp coolers or whole house fans that bring in outside air.

– Refrain from burning wood in your fireplace or firepit and reduce sources of indoor air pollution such as candles, incense, pan-frying, and grilling.

To check the current air quality in any neighborhood, you can download the South Coast AQMD app or visit www.aqmd.gov/AQImap.
