Mark Zuckerberg’s new app, “Threads,” will reportedly be launched on Thursday, further fueling his ongoing feud with Elon Musk. The app, closely linked to Meta-owned Instagram, allows users to maintain the same username and followers. Threads is currently available for pre-order and is expected to debut on July 6.
The app aims to directly compete with Twitter, which has faced criticism for temporarily limiting tweet visibility per day. According to the app’s description, Threads is a platform where communities gather to discuss various topics, from current interests to upcoming trends.
Musk’s challenge to Zuckerberg for a cage match reflects his frustration over Meta’s plan to create a Twitter clone. However, a Meta executive assured employees that Threads would be managed in a more rational manner compared to Musk-led Twitter. Musk humorously responded to a post detailing the data collected by Threads, sarcastically praising its “sane” management.
Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder and former CEO, publicly criticized Meta’s plan and shared a screenshot highlighting privacy concerns about Threads. Musk agreed with Dorsey’s tweet, further emphasizing his opposition.
This launch adds to Twitter’s existing challenges, such as declining revenue, frequent service outages, and a loss of advertisers since Musk’s acquisition of the platform. Meta, which oversees Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, did not provide immediate comment on the app’s release.
Bluesky, a social media startup supported by Dorsey, experienced a surge in traffic after Musk announced Twitter rate limits. Musk justified these limits as necessary to combat data scraping and system manipulation that were deteriorating the user experience.
