Southland Race Tracks Witness Three Additional Equine Fatalities

It is with great sorrow that we report the loss of three more racehorses due to racing or training injuries at Southland tracks. The California Horse Racing Board announced these tragic incidents on Monday.

Among the casualties, two occurred at Santa Anita and one at Los Alamitos. One of the victims was Twentyseventrouts, a 6-year-old bay mare with a promising career. Tragically, she suffered a catastrophic injury during Sunday’s third race at Los Alamitos Race Course and fell face-first to the turf. This makes her the eighth horse to lose its life due to racing or training injuries at the Cypress track this year.

Another victim was Classic Coyne, a 4-year-old dark brown filly. She sadly passed away after sustaining an injury while training at Santa Anita. Her last recorded workout was on Sunday, running five furlongs on the dirt track. The cause of her death is currently listed as non-musculoskeletal, pending an official determination by the CHRB.

Additionally, Animae, a 2-year-old bay filly who had not yet raced, also suffered a training injury at Santa Anita and lost her life on Saturday. She had a workout that same day, running three furlongs on the dirt training track. The cause of her death is listed as musculoskeletal, with further investigation pending.

With these recent tragedies, Santa Anita has now experienced a total of 11 racehorse fatalities due to racing or training injuries in 2023.

These heartbreaking incidents come just two days after the CHRB announced that the implementation of increased safety measures had resulted in a decline in horse fatalities during the 2022-23 fiscal year at board-sanctioned tracks.

According to the CHRB, there were 26 horse deaths caused by musculoskeletal injuries in the fiscal year ending June 30, compared to 39 the previous year. While any loss of life is still deeply concerning, these numbers demonstrate the positive impact of the new regulations, policies, and procedures that have been implemented in collaboration with the industry.

CHRB Chairman Greg Ferraro expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating, “That’s still too many fatalities, but it shows that all of the new regulations, policies, and procedures that we’ve introduced in cooperation with the industry have had a significant effect. Our efforts are focused primarily on preventable injuries, and that’s what the numbers reflect. I don’t know of any racing jurisdiction in the country that even comes close to matching this effort or result.”
