Vietnam Imposes Ban on ‘Barbie’ Film for Displaying Controversial South China Sea Map

In a disappointing turn of events for “Barbie” fans in Vietnam, the country has decided to ban the commercial screenings of the Warner Bros. film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The film was originally scheduled to release on July 21st but has been blocked due to a scene featuring a map that displays China’s contested territory in the South China Sea. This decision has been made by the National Film Evaluation Council, according to the director general of the Vietnam Cinema Department.

The controversy surrounding the “nine-dash line,” which represents China’s claims over parts of the South China Sea, including areas Vietnam considers its own, is not new. In fact, other films like DreamWorks’ “Abominable” and Sony’s “Uncharted” have also faced bans in Vietnam due to similar issues with the depiction of the disputed territory on maps. It’s worth noting that Exhibitor CGV faced fines for showing “Abominable” before it was officially banned.

Not only movies, but television shows like “Madam Secretary” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” have encountered difficulties as well. Both were instructed to remove scenes featuring the contentious map. This highlights the sensitive nature of the South China Sea dispute and the strict regulations surrounding its depiction.

Warner Bros., the studio behind “Barbie,” has not yet responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the ban. It remains to be seen how this ban will impact the film’s availability and reception in other countries.
