In My Opinion, Respect, Not Skirts, Defines a Woman

The news article titled “Justices Decline Case Involving Charter School’s Skirt Policy” discusses the disappointment of Charter Day School founder Baker Mitchell regarding the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit’s decision to uphold a lower court ruling that charter schools must respect the constitutional rights of their students. Mitchell had implemented a policy at his school that required girls to wear skirts as a means to promote chivalry and respect between genders. In line with this, boys were also expected to hold doors open for girls and provide them with umbrellas to shield them from rain.

However, it is important to note that the concept of “chivalry” originates from a system that depicted women as weak and incapable of taking care of themselves. Back then, women were unable to own property and relied on their male relatives for support. Additionally, women were denied the right to vote due to the belief that they lacked the intelligence necessary to contribute meaningfully to political decisions. This perspective is far from respectful.

Thankfully, our contemporary world is radically different. Women can and do strive for excellence in all aspects of life. True respect for girls and young women lies in empowering them to be self-sufficient. Instead of shielding them from rain, we should focus on equipping them to thrive in any circumstance.

In conclusion, it is clear that the notion of chivalry rooted in old societal norms is no longer applicable or beneficial. Respecting and empowering girls should involve encouraging their independence and providing them with the tools and skills necessary to succeed.
