It’s a question I never thought I would answer with a resounding “Yes,” or even entertain the thought of it. After working with celebrities for over a decade, I believed I had grown immune to being starstruck or fascinated by any celebrity, let alone becoming a superfan. But life has a funny way of surprising us.
And so, on June 9th, I found myself boarding a flight to Singapore to attend the “Beluca 1st Fan Meet” event featuring the beloved Thai boys’ love (BL) teams TayNew (Tay Tawan and New Thitipoom) and OffGun (Off Jumpol and Gun Atthaphan). These tandems have captured the hearts of fans with their roles in popular series produced by GMMTV, one of Thailand’s biggest entertainment conglomerates.
As I joined the enthusiastic group of fans at the Capitol Theatre, I couldn’t help but be amazed by their dedication. They had set up a small area outside the venue, generously sharing fan-made artworks, unique giveaways, and photo cards. Some even went as far as making handmade banners for fan events. I spoke with fellow fans who, like me, had gone to great lengths and invested time and money to be in the presence of their idols.
When Tay, New, Off, and Gun took the stage, their energy was contagious. Whether it was their good looks, infectious smiles, playful banter, or the way they interacted with each other, there was something magical about them that made my heart flutter. It felt like watching a live BL rom-com as they actively participated in games and thoughtfully responded to every question. They even treated us to a mini concert, showcasing their talents and performances from their prior sold-out concert in Thailand.
Amidst the sea of light sticks and heartfelt banners, what truly touched me were the stories of my fellow fans. For some, watching Tay, New, Off, and Gun and their BL love series had inspired them to embrace their sexual identity and overcome personal obstacles. Others found solace and warmth in the actors and shows during the pandemic, with a positive impact on their mental health.
After the show, I had the opportunity for a hi-touch and photo session with the four stars. I wanted to make my interaction with them memorable, considering I only had a few seconds to connect. To my delight, New recognized the custom-designed shirt I was wearing with his face on it and greeted me with a friendly “Mabuhay!” It was an instant heart-skipping moment. As I admired his shoes, I couldn’t help but blurt out, “Oh my God! We’re wearing the same shoes!” The coincidence amused Tay and earned compliments from Off and Gun.
As we posed for the photo, the cameras clicked, capturing one of my favorite fan-meet experiences. Looking back, I’m grateful I took the opportunity to go all-out for the stars I admire. If given the chance, why not leap into the moment, immerse yourself, and let it sweep you away? You never know, it might lead to one of your most fulfilling idol encounters.
