Gavin Newsom Issues ‘Significant’ Alert Regarding SCOTUS’ Affirmative Action Ruling

California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his concern about the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action, stating that it will have a “significant” impact on minority communities. He noted that he was not surprised by the move, considering the effects of California Prop. 209, which banned affirmative action in the state’s public higher education, and the University of California system’s decision to end affirmative action the year before.

Newsom emphasized the profound impact these actions had on Black and brown communities, stating that other states can expect similar consequences by looking at California’s example. He warned that there will be a decline in the number of African American and Latino admissions to institutions of higher learning.

According to an analysis by The Washington Post, data shows that first-year college-age Hispanic students at UCLA and the University of California at Berkeley in 2020 made up only 21.5% of the population, which is 29 percentage points lower than the population of college-age Hispanic students in California.

The analysis also revealed that the ban on affirmative action caused a decrease in the number of Black and Hispanic students at selective schools, while their populations increased at less selective public universities.

Newsom further shared that UC Berkeley only admitted 228 African American students out of 7,000 admissions last year, emphasizing his concern about the situation and stating that the Supreme Court is trying to take the country back to a pre-1960s world.
