A man was apprehended in the Washington, DC neighborhood where former President Barack Obama resides. Law enforcement officials informed CNN that the individual possessed several firearms and materials for constructing an explosive. The suspect had streamed on the internet, claiming to have a detonator. The Metropolitan Police Department and federal law enforcement arrested Taylor Taranto, who already had an open warrant relating to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack. Taranto is now facing charges as a fugitive from justice.

The MPD stated in a message to CNN that officers involved in the arrest requested the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team to conduct a thorough sweep of Taranto’s van in the vicinity of the arrest. The MPD confirmed there is no immediate threat to the community, and the incident remains under investigation.

Authorities discovered firearms and materials to create Molotov cocktails inside Taranto’s vehicle. However, law enforcement officials maintain that there is currently no indication of a direct threat to the Obamas.

A spokesperson for the Obamas declined to comment on the matter.

The United States Capitol Police assisted in the investigation to ensure public safety and protect Members of Congress from potential violence, according to Jason Bell, the acting assistant chief for protective and intelligence operations. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces are actively investigating Taranto’s actions.

According to the MPD, Taranto does not have a permanent residence.
