Cleveland Guardians manager, Terry Francona, who has been with the team for 11 seasons, decided to sit out of Tuesday’s game against the Royals due to feeling unwell. The 64-year-old Francona will undergo further testing at The University of Kansas Health System. In his absence, bench coach DeMarlo Hale took over as the manager for the night.
This isn’t the first time Francona has faced health issues in recent years. In 2017, he had to miss 20 days after undergoing a cardiac ablation procedure. In 2020, he was sidelined for half of the shortened season due to gastrointestinal and blood-clotting complications, which led to his stay in the intensive care unit. And in 2021, he experienced hip pain and later discovered he had a staph infection in his toe.
Despite these setbacks, Francona, the winningest manager in Cleveland history, has remained committed to the Guardians. He has won two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and 2007 and has an impressive 1,911-1,626 record as a major league manager.
In the meantime, Hale has previously managed the team for 63 games in 2021, stepping in when Francona needed to take a break. The Guardians have made the playoffs six times during Francona’s tenure, reaching the World Series in 2016.
It’s worth noting that Francona’s contract with the Guardians is open-ended, with the team committed to him as long as he is physically and mentally capable of continuing in his role. He is a respected figure in the league, with only Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy having more wins among active managers.
