Kamala Harris Sets New Precedent as Vice President

According to a recent poll by NBC, Vice President Kamala Harris is facing record-low favorability numbers, with 49% of respondents expressing a negative opinion of her. Only 32% of respondents view Harris favorably, resulting in a net rating of -17, the lowest in the history of the poll. In comparison, former Vice President Mike Pence had a negative rating of 38% and a positive rating of 34% in a similar poll conducted in late 2019.

Democratic strategist Cornell Belcher suggests that these numbers shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the first woman of color to hold the position of Vice President often faces a different level of scrutiny. It is common for the favorability of VPs to align with that of the president they serve. Currently, President Biden has a disapproval rate of 53.1% and an approval rate of 41.9%. Similarly, Harris has a disapproval rate of 53.2% and an approval rate of 41.5%. To improve Harris’ numbers and secure re-election, the Biden administration plans to highlight her policies and achievements by incorporating her into campaign events. The poll was conducted from June 16 to June 20, with a margin of error of 3.1%.
