Authorities have confirmed that three out of the four individuals tragically killed in a single-vehicle accident on the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Downey were U.S. Marines. The crash, which took place around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, claimed the lives of all four victims. The identity of the fourth victim has not been disclosed, pending notification of their family members.
Based on information provided by officials at Camp Pendleton, it has been reported that Daniel Nichols, 26, Joshua Moore Jr., 27, and Rodrigo Zermeno Gomez, 21, were the Marines involved in the accident. These individuals were stationed at Camp Pendleton according to KCAL’s sources.
As stated by First Lt. Sean Waterman at Camp Pendleton, two of the deceased Marines were assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force. The third Marine was assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, as reported by the Los Angeles Daily News.
According to KCAL, authorities believe that the accident occurred when the driver of a Dodge Challenger lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with a guardrail on the side of the freeway before crashing into the wall beneath the Lemonran Avenue pedestrian bridge.
A statement from the California Highway Patrol revealed that the impact of the collision resulted in the vehicle splitting in two, leading to the ejection of the two rear passengers onto the right shoulder.
According to KCAL, all occupants were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
