June 26 (UPI) — A 7-year-old Chinese crested dog, born with backward hind legs, has won the prestigious title of World’s Ugliest Dog at a yearly contest held in California.

Scooter, belonging to Linda Celeste Elmquist from Tucson, Arizona, emerged as the winner at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.

“I am ecstatic and immensely proud that Scooter has been proclaimed the victor of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest,” expressed Elmquist in a statement shared by the contest organizers. “Despite the challenges posed by his deformed hind legs, Scooter has triumphed against all odds, exemplifying true resilience and determination. He has become an inspiration to countless people across the globe.”

In second place was Wild Thang, a 7-year-old Pekingese owned by Ann Lewis, who had previously competed four times. Harold Bartholomew, a 16-year-old Chihuahua owned by Sabrina Impelido, secured the third-place position.

The People’s Choice award, decided by online voters, was given to Rascal Deux, owned by Dane Andrew.

Scooter and Elmquist’s victory in the contest also earned them a special appearance on NBC’s Today show on Monday morning.

Elmquist, during the interview, revealed that Scooter was initially given to Tucson animal control by a breeder but was later rescued by the Saving Animals From Euthanasia organization.

As a member of the group, Elmquist eventually adopted Scooter when his previous owner became unable to care for him after a few years.

The World’s Ugliest Dog contest serves as a platform to celebrate imperfect canines and promote the adoption of pets in need of loving homes.
