3 Vital Pledges Biden’s CDC Pick Should Prioritize to Rebuild Agency’s Trustworthiness

Experience the convenience of listening to Fox News articles! One of the many reasons why President Joe Biden’s approval rating sits at a dismal 31% is his failure to deliver on his promise of restoring normalcy after COVID. Despite campaigning on unity, Biden’s decisions based on flawed science have only further divided the country. Surprisingly, Robert Kennedy, Jr., who enjoys 16% support from Democratic primary voters in a recent FOX News poll, is gaining strength due to Biden’s shortcomings.

Unfortunately, Biden’s choice for a replacement at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is another step in the wrong direction. Mandy Cohen, the former secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, followed Dr. Anthony Fauci’s lead throughout the pandemic, even to the point of wearing a mask featuring his face. Her policies implemented harsh restrictions in North Carolina without any proven benefits, and she even reveled in the enforcement of mass shutdowns, showing no remorse for the devastating consequences experienced by countless individuals.

Considering this background, Cohen’s critics have legitimate doubts about her ability to lead the CDC in a new direction. Since she does not require Senate approval for her appointment, there are three commitments she should make to restore the credibility of the CDC.

Firstly, she should agree to a thorough congressional investigation into the decision-making processes during the pandemic. The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability has been instrumental in exposing fraud and waste in federal pandemic spending, and their work should continue in other areas. The CDC’s documented failures, from confusing medical guidance to misrepresentation of data, should be thoroughly examined, and safeguards must be put in place to prevent their repetition.

Secondly, Cohen should condemn the politicization of agency recommendations. It is crucial to prioritize data-driven decision-making over political influence, regardless of which party holds power. An independent review of the CDC’s in-house think tank, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, would be a good starting point. During the pandemic, this report selectively presented data to promote the effectiveness of masks and vaccines, but subsequent studies and common sense have shown that these promises were exaggerated. Strengthening the CDC’s vaccine injury monitoring efforts and increasing transparency are also necessary steps.

Lastly, Cohen must demonstrate a commitment to medical freedom. Those who raised concerns during the pandemic were often ostracized and silenced. The CDC’s role is not to police and shame individuals who choose not to follow agency recommendations, but rather to provide comprehensive and transparent scientific data to inform individuals’ healthcare decisions. A one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective.

The success of Biden’s handling of the pandemic will be determined by voters next November, or even sooner. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll indicates that 80% of Democrats want to see Biden engage in a debate with Kennedy. To truly move forward, the next CDC director must learn from the mistakes of the past. We can only hope that Cohen seizes this opportunity.

Dr. Pierre Kory, president and chief medical officer of the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance, shares these insights.
