Poll: Trump’s Lead Expands After Indictment, as a Lingering Issue Persists for Biden among Voters

Former President Donald Trump continues to maintain his position as the leading frontrunner for the GOP, despite facing federal charges. However, a recent poll reveals that almost half of GOP voters are uncertain about whether he should continue to lead the party. The NBC poll shows that a majority of Republican voters would vote for Trump in the primary, with 51% choosing him as their top candidate. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis comes in second with 22% support, followed by former Vice President Mike Pence with 7%.

These figures are compared to the candidates’ standings among GOP voters in April, shortly after Trump was indicted in New York for hush-money payments made in 2016. Back then, 46% of Republican voters supported Trump, and 31% supported DeSantis. Despite pleading not guilty to 37 federal charges related to the handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in June, 77% of GOP primary voters expressed only minor concerns (14%) or no concerns at all (63%) about the charges. Additionally, 64% of Republican voters believe that the indictments and investigations against Trump are politically motivated.

In contrast, among all registered voters, 55% have major concerns (47%) or moderate concerns (8%) about the charges. Despite facing these concerns, Trump remains the frontrunner in the GOP, even when compared to DeSantis in a hypothetical match-up, with 60% of Republican voters backing Trump and only 36% supporting DeSantis. However, in a hypothetical battle against President Joe Biden, Biden comes out on top with 49% of the vote, while Trump receives 45% support. Interestingly, 68% of those surveyed expressed major or moderate concerns about Biden’s mental and physical health.

On the question of whether Trump should remain the leader of the Republican Party, nearly half of GOP voters agree, with 21% believing that he was a good president but that it is time to consider other leaders. Trump appeared in a Miami federal courthouse in June in connection to the classified documents case, making him the first former president to face federal criminal charges. The charges against him include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and false statements. In response, Trump criticized the federal indictment as a “sham” and accused the Biden administration of interfering in the election. He called it “the most heinous abuse of power in the history of our country.”

During his speech at his Trump National Golf Club Bedminster property after appearing in federal court, Trump denounced the indictment and referred to it as “election interference” by the Biden administration. He also criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith, calling him a “deranged lunatic,” and accused President Biden of having his “top political opponent arrested and charged.”

In conclusion, despite facing federal charges, Donald Trump continues to be the leading GOP frontrunner. However, a significant portion of GOP voters remain skeptical about his ongoing leadership.
