Interstate 95 has reopened in less than two weeks after an unfortunate collapse in Philadelphia. The reconstruction was completed ahead of schedule, allowing traffic to resume on this vital stretch of the East Coast’s main north-south highway. A temporary six-lane roadway has been constructed to accommodate motorists while the permanent bridge is being built. The completion of the project within such a short timeframe has alleviated concerns about extended closures. Traffic began flowing on Friday, with all lanes open shortly after.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed pride in the swift reconstruction efforts, stating, “This was a moment of civic pride for Philly and Pennsylvania. We have shown that when we work together, we can accomplish great things here.” To commemorate the reopening, a procession of fire engines and police vehicles crossed the I-95, with Philadelphia’s pro sports mascots on board. The reopening has brought relief to motorists who have endured heavy traffic congestion in the aftermath of the collapse. The incident occurred when a tractor-trailer hauling gasoline flipped on an off-ramp and caught fire, leading to the collapse of the elevated section of I-95.
The closure of the highway caused significant disruption to traffic in and around Philadelphia. It also posed the risk of increased costs for consumer goods due to the diversion of trucking routes. To expedite the reopening of I-95, lightweight glass nuggets were used to fill the underpass and bring it to surface level. This enabled the creation of three lanes in each direction. The construction progress was even livestreamed online, attracting thousands of viewers. Construction worker April Allen expressed satisfaction with the completion of the project, stating, “We take pride in our work and are pleased to see Philly back on its feet.”
