Zendaya once again captivates our screens (much to the amusement of Tom Holland) as she becomes entangled in a tennis-inspired love triangle with The Crown’s Josh O’Connor and West Side Story’s Mike Faist.
‘Challengers’, directed by Luca Guadagnino of Call Me By Your Name fame, tells the story of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis prodigy whose path crosses with fellow players Art (Faist) and Patrick (O’Connor) as they form complicated relationships. After suffering an injury during a match, Duncan marries Art and becomes his coach. Years later, the three characters reunite, setting the stage for both fierce competition and personal drama.
The newly-released trailer for ‘Challengers’ promises a narrative that unfolds across different time periods—when the trio first meets and in the present day—highlighted by Zendaya’s ever-changing hairstyle.
The unexpected encounter is poised to expose hidden secrets between the three characters. In the trailer, Patrick provocatively tells Art, “you’re disturbed by the fact that she could have been into someone like me,” to which Art responds, “when we were teenagers.” Patrick slyly repeats the line, suggesting another interaction that Patrick is unaware of.
This reminds me of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis comparing sex to tennis in ‘Friends with Benefits.’
