Dr Ranj Singh: Why it was right for me to speak out about This Morning

The former resident doctor of ITV’s flagship show has clarified that his comments about the show’s culture were not directed towards Phillip Schofield. Dr Ranj, who left the programme two years ago, released a statement after Schofield’s own departure from ITV due to his secret affair revelations. In the statement, Dr Ranj criticized the “toxic” culture at ITV and expressed concerns about how people, including himself, were being treated. He felt like he was pushed out for whistleblowing.

At the Attitude Pride Awards 2023, Dr Ranj discussed his social media statement and emphasized that his intention was to create a better working environment for everyone, not to target Phillip Schofield. He stated that he had done what he believed was right and hoped that something positive would come out of it. Dr Ranj emphasized the importance of taking care of employees’ well-being in the workplace, acknowledging that while working in pressurized environments is common, it is crucial to support and look after staff.

When asked about the possibility of returning to This Morning, Dr Ranj mentioned that he now works on Morning Live, which has double the ratings.

In his initial statement, Dr Ranj explained that he had carefully considered sharing his departure from This Morning but felt the need to clarify certain things. He expressed his love and appreciation for working at ITV but became increasingly concerned about the behind-the-scenes treatment of individuals, including himself. Dr Ranj revealed that he had raised his concerns with ITV’s top management, as he believed that the culture at This Morning had become toxic and deviated from the values of ITV. He also mentioned that the whole process had a negative impact on his mental health. However, he expressed gratitude for finding his footing again, recognizing his worth, and finding support within his community.

In response to Dr Ranj’s complaint, ITV conducted an external review, which concluded that there was no evidence of bullying or discrimination. ITV boss Dame Carolyn McCall addressed this in a letter to culture secretary Lucy Frazer, DCMS Committee chair Dame Caroline Dinenage, and Ofcom’s chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes.
