New York-based gallerist Alex Tieghi-Walker is bringing his pop-up London exhibition to No. 9 Cork Street until June 24. The gallery space, operated by the team behind Frieze art fair, will transform into The North American Pavilion, featuring a group show of eight galleries from the US, Mexico, and Canada that are all less than five years old. The exhibition promises a surprise with its unique blend of bioplastic chandeliers, taffeta-dressed chairs, and homoerotic needlepoint artwork.
Tieghi-Walker is known for his passion for working with artists who are pushing the boundaries and doing things their own way. Through his online platform, Tiwa Select, he showcases a more tender and handcrafted approach to design. Inspired by his time in northern California, he aims to move away from traditional design and embrace a more personal and artistic style.
Tieghi-Walker’s London debut exhibition presents a history of the US through textile art. It includes quilts from the Appalachian craftspeople and the Alabaman Gee’s Bend collective, antique Navajo weavings, and contemporary works by artists like Jordan Nassar and Sal Salandra. Each piece tells a unique story and reflects the diverse cultural heritage of North America.
The exhibition also highlights the best of North American curation, featuring galleries like Noon Projects, Bruises, and Of the Cloth. These galleries are breaking down the boundaries between design, art, and craft by showcasing a diverse range of mediums and styles. The founders believe that by combining different artistic outputs, they can create a more dynamic and thought-provoking experience for viewers.
Further contributions to the exhibition come from galleries like Marta and Emma Scully, who champion American craftsmanship and contemporary design. They collaborate with talented artists and craftsmen to showcase their unique creations and challenge the perception that European craftsmanship is superior. Through this exhibition, they hope to highlight the incredible talent and creativity found in the US.
The North American Pavilion is a celebration of diversity and creativity, showcasing the work of artists from various backgrounds and disciplines. The exhibition aims to surprise and delight visitors with its eclectic mix of artistic styles and unique storytelling. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply curious about the latest trends in design, this exhibition is sure to leave a lasting impression.
