Ye Files Lawsuit to Be Freed from Claims Made by Two Former Donda Academy Teachers

Ye is requesting to be removed as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by two former teachers at his Donda Academy. The teachers claim that they were fired earlier this year after raising concerns about work conditions and alleged wage violations.

The plaintiffs, Cecilia Hailey and Chekarey Byers, are suing the rapper, who used to go by the name Kanye West, along with the school and its directors. They argue in a suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that they were the only Black female teachers at the Simi Valley school and that their wages were unlawfully withheld. They also claim that they were wrongfully terminated in March.

In court documents submitted to Judge Robert B. Broadbelt on Monday, Ye’s lawyers argue that the allegation against the singer, which accuses him of violating the state Labor Code by consistently providing inaccurate and untimely wage statements, should be dismissed. A hearing for this matter is scheduled for January 4.

“The truth is, Ye has no involvement in Donda’s policies, practices, and procedures regarding employee pay and wage statements,” argue Ye’s attorneys in their court papers. “The plaintiffs are aware of this fact. However, as often happens with Ye, a well-known artist and entrepreneur, they have irresponsibly thrown in a meritless guilt-by-association theory in their complaint to attract media attention and pressure for a settlement.”

The Donda Academy is a private Christian school where Ye serves as the CEO. Hailey and Byers claim that their paychecks were consistently late or incorrect during their employment.

In her lawsuit filed on April 6, Byers states that she never received her first paycheck. Both plaintiffs allege that they were consistently underpaid by approximately $1,800 to $2,700 per pay period. They assert that they complained to Donda about this issue, but instead of resolving it, they were terminated in violation of the Labor Code. They also claim that they were not promptly paid their wages upon termination.

In addition, the plaintiffs accuse the academy of lacking a proper disciplinary system, consequently enabling severe bullying among students. They also assert that the school does not employ cleaning staff because Ye opposes the use of chemical cleaning products, which leaves teachers responsible for cleaning using acid water and microfiber cloths.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs were informed of their termination on March 3 while they were in the academy’s parking lot.
